Chapter one

Fields that looked like home

A canola field in full yellow flower under a low evening sun

Harjit and Simran Grewal grew up outside Ludhiana, where the winter fields turn yellow with sarson, mustard in flower. Their first spring in Alberta, they drove south past Leduc and saw canola running to the horizon. It looked like home.

In 2009 they opened Sarson Kitchen in Mill Woods with Simran’s mother’s recipes and a clay tandoor that Harjit still lights every morning. The dal goes on the night before. The saag takes all afternoon.

“If the saag isn’t right, it doesn’t leave the kitchen.”

We cook big, generous food because that’s how we were fed. If it’s your first time, tell us. We’ll bring you something to try.
