A chemistry teacher’s roastery
Coffee is chemistry you can drink. I just never stopped running the experiment.
Ruth Amankwah taught high-school chemistry for eleven years. In 2014 she bought a one-kilo roaster, set it up in her garage a few blocks from here, and started leaving bags on the neighbours’ porches.
By 2017 the neighbours had talked her into a shop: a 1920s corner store on 112 Avenue, with its original maple floor and a window that catches the morning sun. She still roasts every Tuesday, and still writes the tasting notes by hand.
