A two-lane highway running straight across green prairie toward the mountains, under a big sky
Since1971

Since 1971, give or take a highway

Dorothy “Dot” Kowalchuk poured her first cup in 1971, at a truck-stop café on Highway 16 where the prairie runs out and the mountains start. Truckers came for the pie and stayed for Dot, who remembered every order and every grandkid’s name.

The café closed in 2004. In 2018 her granddaughter Kayla brought it back down the same highway in Sherwood Park, with Dot’s name on the sign, Dot’s pie recipes in a binder by the oven, and the coffee still bottomless.

Dot still comes in most Sundays. She sits at the end of the counter, and she will tell you if the crust is right.

Feed them like family and keep the coffee coming. The rest takes care of itself.
